It is an urban fantasy action manga created by Akutami_Gege. The franchise started with a short 4 chapter manga originally titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, which ran from April 28, 2017 to July 28, 2017 in Jump Giga. The positive response to the manga led to Akutami developing the main series, and the short manga would be retroactively titled Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Unlike most pilot type manga, JJK 0 is canon and important to the plot of the main series and introduces multiple major characters who play a significant role in the main series. The main manga, which functions as a sequel, started on March 5, 2018 in Weekly Shounen Jump and ended on September 30, 2024. It was adapted into an anime TV series by Mappa. The anime was directed by Park_Sunghoo, who previously directed another action anime for Mappa The God of High School, written by Seto Hiroshi, and scored by Terui Yoshimasa, Tsutumi Hiroaki, and Okehazama Alisa. The vocal songs were performed by Chica, Che Lingo, RIN, and Steve Memmolo while the rap songs were performed by Paranom, Aztech, and Kasper. The first season ran from October 3, 2020 to March 27, 2021. Most of the same crew worked on the adaptation of the prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, but Park left Mappa soon afterwards, leaving the second season to be handled by a different director, Goshozono Shouta. The second season ran from July 6, 2023 to December 28, 2023. Since this series has multiple status quo shaking plot twists and is massively popular, be wary of spoilers for this series. The series draws inspiration from multiple sources. Neon Genesis Evangelion inspired the series' approach to mythology and voice actress Ogata Megumi, known for playing Ikari Shinji in said series, plays the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Okkotsu Yuuta. Another big influence was the work of mangaka Togashi Yoshihiro, particularly his manga Hunter X Hunter with Akutami drawing inspiration from said series for JJK's power system. The series follows Itadori Yuuji, an athletic boy who follows two mantras, always help others and die surrounded by people. Both of them were taught by his grandfather who is now deceased leaving Yuuji all alone. One day, the members of the Occult Research club at his school end up attracting real curses towards their school when they unseal a rotten finger. In the ensuing chaos, Yuuji ends up swallowing the finger, which causes his body to become host to an infamous and dangerous curse known as Sukuna Ryomen. This makes him the target of Jujutsu sorcerers who are trained to eliminate curses and Yuuji is set to be executed and Sukuna exorcised. However, Jujutsu teacher Gojou Satoru, intervenes and strikes a deal with the higher ups of Jujutsu society. As Yuuji has demonstrated some ability to control the curse, he will undergo training at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. Over the course of his training, Yuuji will locate Sukuna's other rotten fingers and consume them. Then, the Jujutsu sorcerers will exorcise Sukuna. Yuuji leaves his regular high school to undergo training as a Jujutsu sorceror under Gojou's tutelage alongside Fushiguro Megumi and Kugisaki Nobara. The three of them train to master their curse techniques and protect the populace from the Curse monsters. However, a secret group of Curses is lurking around with their eyes on Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, coordinating multiple attacks on them and setting the stage for an all out war between the sorcerors and the Curses that will put Yuuji's mantra to the test. . . The series started off with modest sales but steadily grew in popularity over the years, becoming one of the top-selling manga in Japan by the 2020s, selling over 80 million copies by July 2023. The first season won Best TV Anime and Best Screenplay awards at the 2021 Newtype Anime Awards, and in 2022, the series won the Tokyo Anime Award for Animation of the Year in the television category.
