It was created by Type-Moon, written by Kinoko_Nasu and illustrated by Takeuchi_Takashi. It was released on January 30, 2004. There are two versions of it, the original which included explicit sex scenes, and the clean version which removes them but keeps the rest of the story intact. The visual novel was a massive success, becoming one of the most successful visual novels ever created, selling 751,488 copies. This made it the most well-know installment of the Nasuverse, becoming a major franchise in and of itself. It tells the story of Shirou Emiya, an idealistic teen orphan with a strong hero complex. He was taken in by a mage named Kiritsugu Emiya who instilled in him his ideals and started his training in being a mage. Even after his adoptive father passed away, Shirou continues his quest to be an ideal hero who uses his abilities to make the world better. One night, he stumbles upon a battle between two super-powered warriors dueling to the death. This drags Shirou into the Fifth Holy Grail War, a battle royale where Masters are paired with Servants, warriors taken from various myths from around the world, and war with each other for the Holy Grail. Shirou is nearly killed by one of the warriors, but is rescued by a woman who becomes his Servant, Saber. Now that Shirou has been dragged into the Holy Grail War, he must fight for his life against other Master/Servant duos and face challenges to the heroic ideals he's based his life around. The visual novel's story then splits into three wildly different story paths depending on the player's choices, Fate, Unlimited_Blade_Works, and Heaven's_Feel. Due to the wildly different natures of these three story arcs, each anime adaptation picks one path and sticks with it to the end. Each path has been adapted into an anime. The Fate path was adapted into a 2006 TV anime by Studio_Deen. It was directed by Yamaguchi Yuuji, written by Satou Takuya and had a soundtrack composed by Kawai Kenji. Unlimited Blade Works was adapted twice, first by Deen again as a 2010 anime film and created by the same crew as the TV series. It was adapted a second time by ufotable as a 2014-2015 anime TV series directed by Miura Takahiro and written by Hiyama Akira, Sato Kazuhara, and Ichinose Tatsuki. The soundtrack was composed by Fukusawa Hideki. Heaven's Feel was adapted by ufotable again as a movie trilogy that ran from 2017-2020. The films were directed by Sudou Tomonori, written by Hiyama, and have soundtracks composed by Kajiura Yuki. While the crew behind each adaptation has changed multiple times, the cast of seiyuu have mostly been the same since the first 2006 adaptation.
