The novels ran from December 29, 2012 to December 28, 2014. It was adapted into an anime TV series by A-1_Pictures that ran from July 2, 2017 to December 30, 2017. The anime was directed by Asai Yoshiyuki, written by Higashide, and had a soundtrack composed by Yokoyama Masaru. The series takes place in an alternate universe where the events of the original Fate/Stay Night don't happen. Instead, the 4th Holy Grail War now takes place in Romania. Instead of a free for all battle royale, two factions have declared war on each other for the Holy Grail, the red faction, which represents the Mage Association, and the Black faction, which represents the Yggdmillenia family. The upcoming war will be overseen by Jeanne D'arc, a Ruler Servant, who will ensure that both factions follow the code of conduct of the Holy Grail War. However, both factions are fraught with internal tensions with various members seeking to get their hands on the Grail at all costs, even if it means backstabbing their fellow members and disregarding the rules. In the middle of the warring factions stands Sieg, a homunclus, created by the Yggdmillenia family, who unusually has more agency than the other homunculi created by them. He escapes from the Yggdmillenia family with the help of two Black faction Servants who sympathize with him, Astolfo and Siegfried. The two of them, along with Jeanne, want Sieg to be able to have a peaceful life, free from the Holy Grail War, and for him to find his own meaning in life, but as Sieg struggles to find his purpose in life, he finds himself making decisions that pull him into the center of the Fourth Holy Grail War. . . The series was originally planned to be an online Fate game and was promoted as such. However, the plans for the game fell through and it was converted into a light novel. It would not be until 2015 with Fate/Grand order that an online Fate game would be made. The characters from this series were later imported into said game.
