    After seeing the real estate advertisements for Burgundy, you should have told your viewers to beware of words like "viager" or "life occupied". That means that you pay the owner now, but you can't take possession until after whoever lives there dies. (The older the resident is, the higher the price.) Can you afford to wait an unspecified time (10-20+ years?) for the property? Probably not. Most French real estate search engines will allow you to filter out those listings, but you still need to be careful because some unscrupulous realtors don't mark properties as "viager", they only add a small note at the end of the description.

    Thank you for giving Occitanie a recommendation. Not many Brits know about the area. We bought a small house in Agde in 2018 and have now moved here permanently from the UK. It's a fantastic area for retirement. Housing is affordable unless you want a sea view. Great area for cycling, rambling and trekking. Sea water and beaches are amongst the cleanest in the whole of the Mediterranean. Direct trains to Paris (4hrs), Barcelona (2 hrs) and Marseille (onwards to Italy) 2hrs. And there are about 6 airports in the region.

    I used to live in Cannes, and have been looking into moving to Corsica now, because it feels much the same, a bit like living at the same time in France and in Italy. I was absolutely gobsmacked at how much space there still is, and how insanely inexpensive real estate is. Yes, I am well aware that basic necessities are far more expensive than on the mainland, and that it is the poorest region in France, etc., but I think it is the perfect alternative for the French Riviera, which I personally have not been able to find anywhere in mainland France.

    All I can say for people who would be interested, is that with the warming climate it doesn’t t rain so much in Normandy where I live now. For example yesterday it was pouring and colder but today it is sunny and warm. Weather seems to have change. If a house is cheap, there's always a reason. The pleasure of sitting outside it with a glass of wine will soon wear off.. The market always reflects the perceived value of a property.. ask yourself where is the nearest airport, train station, doctor, shops, sports activities, hospital, dentists, school (if you have kids). Will you need a car for everything - or are there facilities within walking distance?

    I'm French and I know a few expatriates. Those I know know that Burgundy produces top-of-the-range wines and that a good bottle of Meursault will quickly exceed 50 euros (and not 3 euros...). Even Beaujolais (Burgundy's neighboring wine) costs more than 10 euros when it's famous.
    Burgundy is a depopulating region. As a result, it's easy to find housing for under 100,000 euros, except in Beaune, which has become a major tourist base. The expatriates I know are enthusiastic at first: “It's pretty, the people are nice, medical costs are very low.” But then they realize that the winters are long, the locals don't speak English well and it's complicated to get medical care because there aren't many doctors left and the nearest hospital is far away. What's more, there's a lot of red tape involved. And they understand that it will be complicated to resell their house as the region is depopulating.

    2/ Because of all the vines all over, you have a better chance to find a lot of pesticide and herbicide, not only in wine, but also into water, fruits and vegetable.

    Europe doesnt need so many US & UK immigrants

    • @ExpatTheExplorer
      @ExpatTheExplorer  8 месяцев назад +1

      @m.j.5333 US and UK immigrants are boosting European economy, they invest in properties, support local businesses , form new companies, easily adapt to European culture and in overall create economic growth. Unlike some immigrants from other parts of the world.

      @@ExpatTheExplorer Low budget retiring US/UL immigrants are boosting europe economy when they are a heavy charge on the health system they didn't pay for while working like locals, when the population is already too old? Unlike some immigrants from other pars of the world that are active and have kids, and make a good chunk of doctors, and will adapt to European culture unlike English-speaking only US people (not the UK, they already are european). I have nothing against people from the USA, I have friends here that come from there, but they are working, paying taxes, and with a European salary they aren't making other living costs higher, only because they saw in a film that they can drink a gallon Villageoise each evening until their spouse dies at 70 and they don't have anyone they can talk to anymore because they never cared before to engage with the community.

      Yes the AI is the future. Not everyone can speak or pronounce French words correctly , wether it is AI or human.
