Now Viewing: bleachTag type: Copyright Covers the entire series. Popular shonen urban fantasy action adventure manga created by Kubo_Taito, and his major breakthrough work. It ran from August 20, 2001 to August 22, 2016. It has received an anime, video game, and a few musical adaptations. The anime adaptation was produced by studio_Pierrot and directed by Abe Noriyuki who had previously worked on the similarly themed Yuu Yuu Hakusho. the anime was written by Sogo Masashi and its rock-heavy soundtrack was composed by Sagisu Shiro. It covers the adventures of Kurosaki Ichigo who becomes a shinigami after his home and family are attacked by a Hollow. During the battle, shinigami Kuchiki Rukia is injured and gives her powers to Ichigo who unexpectedly takes more power from her than she expected leaving her in a weakened state. Soon after Ichigo defeats the Hollow. Rukia stays in the human world as opposed to returning to Soul Society and works with Ichigo to take on Hollows, which is the focus of the early portions of the anime/manga. But eventually, things grow more complicated once Soul Society learns that Rukia has transferred her powers to Ichigo which is illegal. She is forced to return to the Soul Society where she'll be executed. Ichigo, along with his friends, decides to save her and is quickly thrust into a much larger and complex conflict. The series notably undergoes a significant shift in focus over the course of the story. While the series initially starts off as a series of relatively short story arcs pitting Ichigo and his friends against the monstrous Hollows, the series shifts towards using long story arcs that involve the heroes fighting against much more dangerous humanoid enemies. The plot and the amount of characters in the cast expands significantly. This is influenced by Kubo's method to get out of potential writer's block; when stuck on where to take the story next, Kubo will often create new characters and have them get involved in the plot. There is also supplementary material like Bleach Unmasked that fills in some plot and character details that are unclear in the manga. As most of the cast use swords, combat in the series often consists of swordplay combined with whatever special supernatural powers the characters have. The shinigami in this series are portrayed as essentially ghost samurai. Kubo states that he likes to listens to rock music when writing and drawing the fight scenes because the music helps him figure out how to pace the fights. He tries to make the injuries the characters suffer look realistic so that the readers will feel what the characters are feeling. Still, he often incorporates comic relief whenever he feels bored. Although the series is set entirely in Japan and the spirit world, there is still an international element to the characters. Each faction is based off of various regions in the world. Soul Society's characters primarily have Japanese names, Hueco Mundo's Spanish, and Vandereich German. This series was one of the series plagiarized by the infamous American comic Incarnate. The series sold 87 million copies in Japan and in its heyday, was considered one of the Big 3 shonen action anime/manga of Shonen Jump, alongside One Piece and Naruto. However, the series notoriously suffered a massive drop in reputation in its later years with the series' ranking in reader polls dropping from the top to the bottom. At the same time, Kubo himself gained a memetic reputation as a troll. This, combined with Kubo developing health issues, led to the series being forced to end sooner than planned. Its anime adaptation also ended just as abruptly in 2012, leaving the final arc unadapted. In spite of these setbacks, the series received a revival in fortune in the late 2010s-early 2020s. A live action film adaptation that covers the early arcs of the manga, with some material from the Soul Society arc, was released on July 20, 2018. It starred Fukushi Sota as Kurosaki Ichigo. The anime TV series was revived almost a decade later in 2021, with this final season covering the final arc of the manga. The manga still sold over 120 million volumes worldwide by 2018. Kubo returned to the Bleach universe with a short 2018 spinoff titled Burn the Witch, which has also been adapted into an anime film, and followed that with a manga sequel titled Bleach: No Breaths from Hell on August 8, 2021.
