The original film was released on October 25, 1978, and was directed by John Carpenter and written by Carpenter and Debra Hill with the latter being responsible for the female characters' dialogue. Carpenter, as he usually does for his films, also composed the film's iconic soundtrack. The film starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance. The film was Curtis' breakthrough leading her to star in many other horror films, and establishing a reputation as a 'scream queen.' is often credited for popularizing this sub-genre of horror films and establishing many of the genre's conventions such as: a sadistic antagonist who is physically imposing and hard to kill and takes out the cast one by one and the main heroine/ final survivor usually being a virginal good girl. Although the genre is known for spawning many violent and gory films, the original film is conspicuously lacking bloodshed in spite of all the murders that take place in the film. The sequels, however, are much more explicit in their carnage, starting with the first sequel Halloween 2. This was an intentional decision by Carpenter who felt that Halloween needed to be able to compete with the bloodier horror films that were being released at the time, and the gorier trend continued with the rest of the franchise. The franchise was originally intended to be an anthology series of Halloween-themed horror films, but the popularity of the first two movies and Michael Myers, and the failure of the third movie which didn't have him, led to the franchise primarily focusing on various people being stalked and attacked by the quiet, sociopathic, and seemingly indestructible killer Michael Myers. The most well known entries of the series have Laurie Strode as their protagonist and the films with her in them are directly linked to form an extended story arc that follows her trying to fight off the killer in various stages of her life. The franchise is notable for spawning multiple continuities, often done as a response to a less well received entry or controversial creative decision. All of the films, except Halloween 3 and the Rob Zombie reboot series, accept the original film as canon. The continuities are as follows: H20 Timeline: Halloween (1978) Halloween 2 (1981) Halloween H20 (1998) Halloween Resurrection (2002) Halloween 4-6 Timeline: Halloween (1978) Halloween 4 (1988) Halloween 5 (1989) Halloween 6 (1995) Rob Zombie's Halloween: Halloween 2007 Halloween 2 (2009) Old Laurie Timeline: Halloween (1978) Halloween (2018) Stand alone: Halloween 3 (1982) Recurring Characters: Michael_Myers Laurie_Strode Sam_Loomis Jamie_Lloyd Other Wiki Information Last updated: 10/30/18 11:39 AM by jojosstand This entry is not locked and you can edit it as you see fit. |
